You need to scrub it off with scotchbrite or other similar item. After that you need to season it well, for more instructions on that search for how to season cast iron cookware on yahoo

Just don't use soap. Once you clean the rust, you have to reseason the cookware.

wash them real good, rinse in hot water and dry them immediately. if they air dry, they will rust again.

SOS or BRILLO PADS, when you are done, lightly oil the pans so they do not rust again.

Scrub off the rust with a steel wool pad, then rub the cookware with vegetable oil to keep them from rusting.

Avoid using soap, just sponge them out, rinse and wipe.

Drying your pans in a warmish oven is supposed to get them from rusting.

Coat the pan with a spray oil and then fill the pan about an inch full with cooking oil, any kind. Let the pan sit overnight. You will see that your pan has absorbed most of the oil and you can just wipe the rust off with a dry paper towel.

For other cleanings, remember to never use soap on your cast iron. Wipe it out using water if you absolutely have to or use a dry steel scrubber (not steel wool) to scrape out some of the tougher stuff. After you scrub it heat the pan up smoking hot. Turn off the heat and when it is cooled down enough, put oil in it and let it sit overnight.

I always spray my pans with oil after cleaning.

First you clean the cookware with a scouring pad to remove the rust, then you "season" it with cooking oil in a 200 degree oven for an hour. To season the pan, make sure it is dry by heating it on a burner (empty) for a minute or two allow it to cool. Then you coat the pan inside and out with a thin coat of cooking oil. I usually just put a small amount of oil on a paper towel and rub the pan until coated. Put the pan in the oven at 200 degrees for an hour, then turn the oven off and leave the pan in the oven to cool. To keep the pan from rusting again you'll need to "dry" it on a burner after you wash it each time and reapply the oil at intervals.

My mother uses this method and her cast iron pans are in great shape.
